Welcome to the Social Sciences Unit of the Elementary K-6 Online Content Review Module.  This unit provides an overview of the content and skills addressed in the five major social science components of the Elementary K-6 certification exam.

The five broad social science competencies covered in this unit are:

  • Knowledge of time, continuity, and change (history).
  • Knowledge of people, places, and environment (geography).
  • Knowledge of government systems and role of the citizen (government and civics).
  • Knowledge of production, distribution, and consumption (economics).
  • Knowledge of effective instructional practice and assessment of the social sciences.

In the sections that follow you will find passages, timelines, multi-media presentations, interactive links to presentations, articles, resources, and sample examination questions to assist you with your review of the content material. Whenever you click on a "key term", a pop-up definition will appear. Definitions for all key terms used in the Social Sciences unit are also listed in the unit glossary. It is suggested that you review this material and return to those sections where you feel less confident for more intensive study.
