Introduction

Elementary K-6 Online Content Review Module Social Science
and Common Core State Standards

Students studying social science need to meet the new Common Core Literacy Standards for each grade level throughout their K-12 education in order to become college-and career-ready.

The Common Core Literacy Standards establish that instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening and language is a shared responsibility among English language arts and the content areas of mathematics, history/social studies, science and technical subjects. Teachers in the content areas have expertise in their disciplines and can help students reach the literacy standards within subject areas whether they teach all subjects in a grade level or specialize in specific subject areas.

The Common Core Literacy Standards for Grades K-5 are included in the section: English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Studies and can be found on the website http://www.floridastandards.org/Standards/Common_Core_Standards.aspx.

Become familiar with the following literacy standards posted on this website beginning on the following pages:

  • Reading - page 11
  • Writing - page 18
  • Speaking and Listening – page 22
  • Language – page 25

The Common Core Literacy Standards for reading, speaking listening, writing and language are connected and carried out throughout the process of learning social science. In order to provide educators with information about the Florida Standards (CCSS) as well as the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) the acronyms CCSS and NGSSS are placed at the bottom of each page of the unit.  The acronyms serve as direct links so that participants may quickly access either set of standards at any time during their online studies.
