Overview

Welcome to Universal Design for Learning: K-12 Lesson Plans. The focus of this course is to provide educators with introductory information about the foundations and essential components of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. The course will also provide educators with knowledge, strategies, and tools related to designing lesson plans within a UDL framework.

The course is comprised of an overview, three content units, and a unit that contains the final assessment and outlines the requirements to be eligible for inservice credit. Each content unit includes objectives, content, activities, required reading, and documents in support of the content. External links throughout the module support the topics and provide additional resources for educators.


The content units are:

Unit 1: UDL Foundations

Provides a brief historical overview of the concept of universal design and its application to education known as Universal Design for Learning. Includes information on the three brain networks associated with UDL and the related educational principles. Also includes important Guidelines related to these three areas that help support student learning.

Unit 2: Planning Lessons

Provides an understanding of how to create standards-based learning goals for students that are accessible for all students. Includes information on anticipating and addressing barriers to student learning inherent in curriculum. Strategies for addressing these barriers during lesson planning is also provided.

Unit 3: Creating Lessons

Models the principles and Guidelines of UDL in the context of planning lessons to assist educators in designing an instructional environment free of barriers and accessible for all students. Includes a lesson planning template and guidance on using the template to create personalized lesson plans.
