Section 5: Knowledge of Instructional Resources and Assessment in the Social Sciences
Introduction

This section is designed to give you an overview of the resources and assessments for teaching Social Sciences.

The task force on Early Childhood/Elementary Social Sciences of the National Council for the Social Sciences has produced several reports on elementary children and Social Sciences, education goals for Social Sciences, students' developmental characteristics, a research overview, the current status of Social Sciences as an elementary school subject, and teacher training.

The contents in this unit will help you meet the following objectives.

  • Select appropriate resources for instructional delivery of social sciences concepts, including complex informational text.
  • Identify appropriate resources for planning for instruction of social sciences concepts.
  • Choose appropriate methods for assessing social sciences concepts.
  • Determine appropriate learning environments for social sciences lessons.
