Section 3: Government and Civics in the Elementary Grades
The Rights and Responsibilities of a Citizen in the World, Nation, State, and Community

Citizen responsibilities

The responsibilities of citizens of the United States are defined by their participation in governmental processes:

  1. voting
  2. serving on a jury when called
  3. serving in the armed services if required
  4. obeying the laws of local, state, and federal governments
  5. paying taxes in an honest and timely manner

All of these responsibilities, except for voting, are mandatory. If laws are flouted, the society in which we live and the government that secures our rights are put at risk. Similarly with taxes—the common goods that citizens depend on, such as a functioning system of roads, fire and police protection, and public education, are difficult if not impossible for individuals to pay for by themselves.
