Informal Assessment Results

  • Teacher- or textbook publisher-developed classroom quizzes, essay tests, and other tests are not specialized.
  • Parents are usually informed of results by the teacher when he or she sends the test home with the student.
  • Teachers should develop a system of regularly notifying parents of these types of test results (keeping district guidelines in mind when developing testing systems).
  • Allow questions and feedback from parents and students.
  • Whenever possible and appropriate, review informal assessment results with students individually to make assessments into a learning opportunity.
  • Always explain the purpose of the assessment.

Formal Assessment Results

  • Formal assessment results may be more difficult to explain to parents. Be sure you thoroughly understand the results before talking with parents. Be prepared to answer all types of questions regarding the data.
  • Florida provides FCAT results online and sends reports home to parents.
  • Be familiar with the terms and meanings and what these mean in relation to that parent's child. This module can assist you with understanding terminology.
  • Use terms that are familiar to parents or be prepared to share the meaning of a new term.
