Section 4: Knowledge of Literacy Instruction and Assessment
Using Data to Differentiate Instruction

Guidelines for Differentiation

Differentiation is based on student assessment. In order for all students to make adequate progress in reading, lessons must be appropriately differentiated.

  • Clarify key concepts and generalizations to ensure that all learners gain an understanding that serves as a foundation for future learning. Teachers must identify essential concepts and areas of instructional emphasis.
  • Use assessment as a teaching tool. Assessment  should be on-going and provide information for immediate instructional adjustments. Every student response can be a source of information.
  • Emphasize critical and creative thinking as a goal in lesson design. The tasks, activities, and procedures for students should require that students understand and apply meaning.
  • Engage all learners in meaningful and respectful work.
  • Provide a positive learning environment.
