A Multicultural History of Children's Literature

As with other forms of literature, children's literature emerged from the oral tradition and from many cultures. In almost all world cultures, the folk tales and fables passed down over generations by word of mouth were eventually written down. At first, the intended audience for folk tales and fables might have been the whole community, but in time these genres came primarily to be considered children's literature. From China to India to Europe, cultures in all of these geographic areas told stories with an instructional moral or aspect. In time, works of literature aimed solely at children began to appear.
