Characteristics of Various Types of Reading Assessment

Story Retelling

Story retelling is an effective approach to post-reading assessment. After students have read a story or passage, ask the student to explain what happened in the story. The purpose of retelling is to gain insight into the reader's ability to interact with, interpret, and draw conclusions from the text. Some educators feel that this is more effective than asking questions at the end of a story.
