Section 4: Knowledge of Literacy Instruction and Assessment
Communicating Assessment Results to Students and Parents

Think about all the assessments you give your students in a school year.If your head spins just thinking about criterion-referenced versus norm-referenced versus performance-based assessments, what must a parent think? All parents have a vested interest in their child's education and future and they have the right to know and the need to know what each type of assessment means to their child.

Objective

In this section, you will learn more about communicating assessment results to parents and students. You will also learn about the importance of interpreting students' formal and informal assessment results. Students have the right to know their results. How in-depth assessment results are discussed with students is determined by their age and comprehension level. These two criteria will help determine the terminology you use when talking to students about their results.
