Using Data to Differentiate Instruction
Guidelines for Differentiation
Differentiation is based on student assessment. In order for all students to make adequate progress in reading, lessons must be appropriately differentiated.
- Clarify key concepts and generalizations to ensure that all learners gain an understanding that serves as a foundation for future learning. Teachers must identify essential concepts and areas of instructional emphasis.
- Use assessment as a teaching tool. Assessment should be on-going and provide information for immediate instructional adjustments. Every student response can be a source of information.
- Emphasize critical and creative thinking as a goal in lesson design. The tasks, activities, and procedures for students should require that students understand and apply meaning.
- Engage all learners in meaningful and respectful work.
- Provide a positive learning environment.
