Section 4: Knowledge of Literacy Instruction and Assessment
Purposes of Assessment

Progress Monitoring

The purpose of progress monitoring is to keep the teacher informed of the progress the student is making. Setting goals for students and frequently monitoring their goals through formal or informal assessment helps the teacher in regularly making instructional adjustments based on progress or lack thereof. If a student is having difficulty learning to read, goals may need to be assessed monthly, or even weekly. Again, parents and students need to be aware of the progress monitoring methods, results, and any changes in the goals and plan.
